Jonathan Owens, husband of Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, experienced a close encounter with a would-be thief during his shopping excursion in Milan amidst the ongoing Winter Olympics. The Chicago Bears safety recounted the incident on social media, describing how he thwarted an attempted robbery on Sunday.
Owens, standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 204 pounds, stated that as he was shopping, a thief attempted to snatch his shopping bag. Thanks to a quick reflex and a habit of securing the bag around his hand, Owens was able to prevent the theft. He humorously shared the experience on X, noting the surreal nature of the encounter.
“Not somebody just tried to snatch my shopping bag in Milan,” Owens posted, further adding, “Should’ve seen his face once he realized I turned around and he couldn’t grab it.” He also mentioned watching TikTok videos about pickpockets before the trip, which may have helped him remain vigilant during the incident.
When asked if he considered chasing after the would-be robber, Owens jokingly remarked that the would-be mugger was “not fast at all,” highlighting how slow the man was to flee once he realized the attempt had failed.
While it remains unclear if Biles was present during the attempted robbery, she had been spotted earlier that day shopping with Owens in a Bottega Veneta store, where she expressed gratitude for her husband’s generosity in a social media post.
The couple, who married in 2023, enjoyed their time together at various Winter Olympics events throughout the weekend, including the men’s figure skating final and speed skating competitions, showcasing their shared passion for sports and their commitment to supporting each other.
