President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu recently opened the 2026 session of Parliament in Fiji, addressing crucial themes such as economic recovery, the rising cost of living, and the necessity for inclusive growth. During his speech to Members of Parliament, he stressed the country’s commitment to overcoming global challenges while making certain that economic advancements translate into tangible benefits for households across the nation.

“The recovery from recent global shocks continues, and our focus remains on addressing the rising cost of living, ensuring economic growth leads to genuine improvements in household well-being,” highlighted Ratu Naiqama. He referred to findings from a household income and expenditure survey, which revealed that prior to the pandemic, a considerable portion of the population lived below the poverty line, with an additional 25 percent teetering on the brink of poverty, facing difficulties in both urban and rural settings.

The statistics emphasize the urgent need for the establishment of equitable, well-targeted, and evidence-based policies. The President noted that the government’s agenda for 2026 and beyond seeks not solely economic growth but aims to foster growth that creates quality employment opportunities, protects vulnerable groups, and invests in the skills and capabilities of the population.

Ratu Naiqama outlined three guiding principles that will steer the government’s initiatives: first, unity and diversity, to ensure that all citizens benefit from national advancements irrespective of their backgrounds; second, sustainability and resilience, which focuses on protecting people, the economy, and the environment for future generations; and third, integrity and good governance, aimed at strengthening trust in public institutions and leadership.

These guiding principles will frame legislative efforts, budget decisions, institutional reforms, and public policies across all sectors. This strategic approach is designed to influence national decision-making in the years ahead, ensuring that all Fijians can participate in the nation’s progress and prosperity. The President’s aspirational vision presents hope for a more inclusive and sustainable future for all citizens, paving the way for meaningful change and improvement in quality of life.
