The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has responded to mounting concerns regarding flooding issues at the Naqiliso informal settlement, clarifying that the primary cause is illegal dumping of refuse and wastewater by residents, not their ongoing construction activities near the Nasinu Cemetery. In an official statement, FCS explicitly rejected online allegations linking their construction work to the flooding.

FCS explained that residents have been improperly disposing of household waste directly on FCS property, situated in a low-lying area. This habitual practice has led to a build-up of debris that blocks natural drainage channels. The ongoing construction of a new access road within the FCS’s authorized boundaries has inadvertently worsened the situation, as it has helped to curtail illegal wastewater flow into FCS grounds but caused pooling problems within the surrounding settlement.

Additionally, the service indicated that the settlement does not have an adequate drainage system, resulting in stagnant water and sewage accumulating in clogged drains filled with plastic and other waste. FCS also noted that some homes and bathroom pipes have encroached on their land, which prompted the Lands Department to issue a 30-day notice for residents to remove these encroachments. With that period now expired, an additional 14-day notice has been issued before further action will be pursued.

Following the resolution of these encroachments, FCS plans to improve the drainage system to better manage flooding in the area. The organization assured the public that all necessary construction permits were obtained prior to the start of the project, with all activities conducted within established boundaries and guidelines.

Moreover, FCS aims to work with health authorities to clear out long-standing rubbish from its compound, which includes discarded appliances, roofing materials, and plastics that contribute to the blockage. They are also collaborating with the Fiji Roads Authority and the Lands Department to develop a long-term solution for issues affecting adjacent Government Roads Reserve land.

In light of the unfolding situation, the Fiji Corrections Service has requested that the media obtain further clarification to facilitate accurate and balanced reporting, reaffirming their dedication to engaging with local communities for their safety and welfare during this initiative.
