Last week, we introduced Jhankaar the Band, a contemporary Indian music group founded by percussionist Samresh Rao. Rao explained that the band’s commitment to honoring their classical roots while engaging the younger generation stems from a strong belief in preserving their cultural heritage. Their mentor, Mr. Viveka Nand, a respected educator at the Indian High Commission with four decades of teaching experience, has been a significant influence on the band. He has trained numerous musicians and shared the importance of storytelling through music.
The band’s recent albums, “Girmit Gatha Volume I” and “Girmit Gatha Volume II,” reflect this philosophy. These projects feature traditional lyrics paired with contemporary sounds, aiming to bridge the gap between generations and attract younger listeners. Rao emphasized the importance of evolving musical compositions to resonate with today’s audience, suggesting that relying solely on traditional instruments may not capture the interest of modern music lovers.
Moreover, Rao pointed out a common challenge within the Fijian Indian music scene: many artists focus predominantly on covering Bollywood hits instead of creating original songs.
