Jared McCain’s time with the Philadelphia 76ers has come to an end, as the team has traded the young guard to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The transaction, confirmed on Wednesday, comes with the 76ers receiving a significant return: the Houston Rockets’ 2026 first-round pick along with three second-round selections. Among these, one of the second-round picks is the 2027 most favorable selection from the Thunder, Rockets, Indiana Pacers, and Miami Heat, while the others are 2028 picks that were originally owned by the Milwaukee Bucks and the Thunder.

In his second season, McCain averaged 6.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists while remarkably shooting 37.8% from beyond the arc over 37 games. This move not only clears a roster spot for the Sixers but also helps the team get under the luxury tax threshold, reducing their tax liability from $1.2 million to $3 million after offloading McCain’s $4.2 million salary. This change comes amid increased financial scrutiny, particularly after the team received a $5.8 million tax variance credit following Paul George’s suspension.

McCain’s path with the 76ers was marked by promise but hindered by injuries. He faced a heartbreaking end to his breakout rookie season due to a torn meniscus in his left knee, and his start to the current season was delayed by a torn ligament in his right thumb. Despite this, McCain, who was selected as the 16th pick in the 2024 draft, demonstrated significant potential during his time in Philadelphia. In his career with the team, he averaged 10 points while making 38.1% of his three-point attempts across 60 games. Last season, he showcased his talent with a notable average of 15.3 points, placing him among the league’s top ten in rookie-of-the-year voting, with recognition as a favorite before his injury.

This trade opens a new chapter for McCain as he joins the Thunder, where he will have the opportunity for a fresh start and potentially greater playing time. The Sixers will look to capitalize on their newfound flexibility as they navigate the remainder of the season.
