Fijian workers heading abroad for employment have received a critical warning regarding the dangers of engaging in illegal cash work or violating their employment contracts. Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh stressed that such actions could significantly jeopardize their future prospects and lead to serious risks.

During a farewell ceremony for 90 Fijian workers traveling to Australia under the labour mobility scheme, Singh emphasized the importance of adhering to approved employment arrangements. He cautioned that opting for cash-in-hand work instead of following the guidelines could result in immediate repatriation, income loss, and a permanent ban from participating in overseas employment programs.

Singh also raised safety concerns, pointing out that workers who leave the designated scheme for unauthorized jobs would not be covered under workplace insurance and labour laws. This lack of protection places them in vulnerable positions should accidents or disputes arise. “Once you are outside the scheme, you are no longer covered,” he remarked.

The Minister further illustrated how past incidents have demonstrated how quickly opportunities can vanish due to poor choices. Workers were reminded that Australian law extends equal rights and protections to all employees, including foreign nationals, as long as they stay within the approved employment framework and respect their contractual commitments.

In concluding his remarks, the government encouraged workers to seek help through official channels if they encounter difficulties while abroad. The presence of country liaison officers in Australia was highlighted as a crucial resource for guidance and support.

Workers were urged to maintain discipline and protect their reputations, understanding that their actions abroad not only impact their futures but also shape opportunities for other Fijians aspiring to work overseas. By following these guidelines, they can build better prospects for themselves and pave the way for future generations.
