This urgency was highlighted by the Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, during his address at the 2026 International Customs Day celebration held at the headquarters of the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) in Suva.
Minister Immanuel emphasized that customs serves as a vital frontline defense against various threats, including drug trafficking, illegal weapons, counterfeit products, environmental crimes, and transnational fraud. He noted the significant pressures that customs officers endure while safeguarding borders and communities, often working without the acknowledgment they rightfully deserve.
“Every container examined, every passenger assessed, every document verified represents a decision that carries national consequences,” Mr. Immanuel remarked, underscoring the vital importance of vigilance in customs operations. He stressed that while vigilance is essential, it must be paired with a steadfast commitment to integrity and professionalism.
Focusing on support for customs and border agencies, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering these critical operations through investments in technology, intelligence-led initiatives, and enhanced inter-agency collaboration. This initiative reflects a recognition of customs’ essential role in facilitating legitimate trade while effectively thwarting potential threats.
Additionally, Malakai Naiyaga, chairman of the FRCS board, reiterated the importance of robust governance to enable customs officers to navigate challenging environments. He commended their ability to maintain a balance between firmness and fairness, stating that their work is foundational to lawful trade and crucial for the broader development goals of nations.
