Following a disappointing 76-run defeat to South Africa in their first Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2026, Team India faces significant selection challenges as they look ahead to their next game against Zimbabwe in Chennai. The batting lineup, heavily reliant on left-handed batsmen, is under close examination, especially given the struggles of players like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, as well as the inconsistency shown by captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel has recommended bringing Sanju Samson back into the team, emphasizing that his inclusion could provide a much-needed right-handed perspective in the batting order. Patel pointed out that with Samson set to play for the Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, a “homecoming” could be in the cards as India prepares to face Zimbabwe.
Parthiv discussed the need for the team management, led by head coach Gautam Gambhir and Yadav, to consider having Samson bat at the crucial No. 3 position. “Yes, Sanju Samson is not in great form either, but bringing in a right-hander could offer a different perspective. If Sanju comes in, he should bat at No. 3,” he stated, also suggesting that if Samson is not included, Yadav might have to step up to that role himself.
This potential shift for Samson represents a notable change in his playing position, as he has primarily served as an opener leading up to the tournament. Additionally, Parthiv expressed his desire to see the return of all-rounder Axar Patel, who was omitted from the lineup against South Africa. He pointed out that Patel has a history of making significant contributions in critical moments and should be reconsidered despite the team’s strategic approach to match-ups.
As Team India looks to regroup and strategize for their upcoming match, these changes may not only help address their current batting woes but also inject fresh energy into their campaign. The hope is that with the right adjustments, India can bounce back and find their winning form once more.
