Fifteen young iTaukei individuals have become the inaugural recipients of the iTaukei Land Trust Board Education Scholarship, an initiative aimed at enhancing access to higher education and specialized fields for iTaukei students. The scholarship program, supported by the iTaukei Wealth Fund, is designed to ensure that students from diverse backgrounds, including those in maritime, rural, and urban areas, have equal opportunities to further their education.

Launched late last year, the scholarship invites iTaukei applicants who demonstrate academic dedication, financial need, leadership capabilities, and a commitment to community or national development. Candidates must not already be beneficiaries of other educational schemes, such as the Tertiary Education Loan Scheme (TELS).

The scholarship offers diverse benefits, including financial aid based on merit, field-specific support, and work experience opportunities in priority sectors such as engineering, healthcare, agriculture, aviation, business, IT, finance, and land resource management. Recipients will receive assistance for their tuition, along with mentorship and internship opportunities, and they will be required to work in Fiji for a period of three to five years after graduation.

During a ceremony to award the scholarships, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka praised the iTaukei Land Trust Board for its efforts in creating avenues for career progression and encouraged the recipients to fully utilize the scholarship to achieve their goals. He emphasized the significant contributions of chiefs and landowners associated with TLTB-managed lands, who have allocated a portion of their earnings to support the scholarship initiative.

TLTB Chief Executive Officer, Solomone Nata, highlighted that the program aims to alleviate the shortage of skilled workers in critical operational fields within the organization, thereby enhancing the workforce and capacity in essential industries across Fiji.
