Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated reboot of “The X-Files” has received a pilot order from Hulu, with actress Danielle Deadwyler set to take on a leading role in the series. Coogler, known for his work on “Sinners,” will both write and direct this new adaptation, marking it as the latest project from Onyx Collective to gain traction.
The premise of the reboot centers around “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division focused on cases involving unexplained phenomena.” This fresh narrative direction aims to explore the dynamic between the agents against a backdrop of mystery and suspense, reminiscent of the original series.
In a significant gesture, original “X-Files” creator Chris Carter granted Coogler his blessing to proceed with this new iteration, although he will not be directly involved in its production. Carter expressed his appreciation, stating, “They are free to do with it what they believe. I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.” This endorsement from Carter underlines the excitement surrounding Coogler’s vision for the show.
The original “X-Files” series, which ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002, featured iconic performances from Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny, among others. Following its initial run, Anderson and Duchovny returned for two shorter seasons in 2016 and 2018, as well as for two feature films in 1998 and 2008.
Interestingly, Anderson, who had previously ruled out a return to her groundbreaking role, opened the door to the possibility of making an appearance in Coogler’s version. She commented in an April 2024 interview, “I’m not saying no. Maybe I’ll pop in for a little something, something.” This hint of intrigue further fuels the excitement surrounding the new series.
As fans eagerly await the pilot, the blend of Coogler’s storytelling prowess and the legacy of “The X-Files” could breathe new life into the well-loved franchise, offering both nostalgia and fresh thrills to a modern audience.
