UniFiji Graduation: It's How You Teach, Not Just What You Teach

Humility Over Ego: University of Fiji Graduation Celebrates 308 Graduates

Professor Shaista Shameem, Vice Chancellor of the University of Fiji, highlighted the virtues of humility and the absence of ego during her inspiring speech at the university’s graduation ceremony held at the Saweni Campus in Lautoka. She celebrated the accomplishments of 308 students who achieved a major milestone in their academic journeys, with 39 graduates earning gold medals for their outstanding academic performance.

In an emotional address, Prof Shameem reflected on her own experiences as she saw graduates donning their gowns and preparing to receive their hard-earned certificates alongside their proud families. “I draw a deep breath because when I see all the graduates lined up in beautiful clothes, ready to receive your hard-earned certificates from the Chancellor, I feel I am back there amongst you, excited and somewhat in wonder, that I finally made it,” she shared.

Professor Shameem recognized the challenges many students faced while balancing work, family obligations, and their studies. She underscored the personal growth that emerges from navigating the complexities of university life and forming lasting friendships in a new environment.

She further elaborated on the University of Fiji’s educational philosophy, asserting that the quality of education lies not just in the subject matter taught but in the teaching methods used. She noted the institution’s commitment to providing a holistic education experience across various disciplines, including Humanities, Sciences, Technology, Law, Medicine, Languages, Cultures, and Business, despite its limited resources.

In conclusion, Professor Shameem urged graduates to remember that privilege must be earned through hard work, not merely granted by academic credentials. This message serves as an empowering reminder for graduates as they embark on new endeavors, equipped with knowledge and a strong moral foundation. Through dedication and resilience, they are encouraged to approach their futures with humility and determination, ready to make impactful contributions to society.
