Disability Inclusion Takes Center Stage in 16 Days of Activism

16 Days of Disability Activism Sparks Push for Inclusive Societies

The global initiative known as the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence shines a spotlight on the essential link between disability rights, gender equality, and social justice. In her message for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), Sainimili Tawake, the CEO of the Pacific Disability Forum (PDF), addressed the persistent challenges faced by individuals with disabilities who often find themselves vulnerable to marginalization, exclusion, and violence.

This year’s theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” emphasizes the immediate need for decisive action at both national and regional levels to address these significant issues. Tawake emphasized that equality and inclusion are not just crucial for sustainable development; they are vital to establishing stronger, more resilient, and fair communities. She argued that integrating disability inclusion into the fabric of society is a moral duty that should be prioritized.

In response to these ongoing challenges, the PDF has launched a transformative initiative called the “16 Days of Disability Activism.” This program aims to highlight the importance of disability equity and inclusion as essential elements in the journey toward creating safe and flourishing communities. Tawake called upon governments, civil society, and local communities across Fiji and the region to intensify their efforts to empower individuals with disabilities while protecting them from violence and discrimination.

Moreover, Tawake noted that this day serves as both a celebration of the “strength, leadership, and contributions of persons with disabilities” and an opportunity to reaffirm commitments to building inclusive, violence-free, and equitable societies.

The initiative calls for a unified approach to fostering inclusion, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate in societal activities. By doing so, we pave the way for progress, unity, and the overarching goal of a more just world for all.
