Grand Canyon South Rim Overnight Stays Suspended After Waterline Break

Grand Canyon South Rim Overnight Stays Suspended After Waterline Break

A waterline break has prompted the Grand Canyon National Park to temporarily suspend overnight accommodations at the South Rim starting December 6, due to significant breaks in the Transcanyon Waterline. This line is essential for supplying water to the park, and with water pumping halted, the park authorities have implemented additional restrictions.

The park has not provided a timeline for when overnight lodging services will resume. This is not the first instance of water supply challenges; similar restrictions were imposed in late August when water issues arose on the South Rim.

Despite the halt on overnight stays, the Grand Canyon remains open for visitors, and day-use activities will continue as scheduled. Notably, hotels in the nearby town of Tusayan are not affected by these restrictions. Visitors can enjoy food and beverage services, along with access to the Grand Canyon Clinic and post office, which will remain operational.

The list of affected accommodations managed by Xanterra and Delaware North includes El Tovar, Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik Lodge, Yavapai Lodge, and Trailer Village. During this period, only dry camping will be permitted, and fires are prohibited in both South Rim and inner canyon areas.

While the situation poses challenges for overnight visitors, the park remains committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for day visitors, reflecting efforts to handle operational setbacks effectively.
