BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With milder spring-like weather on the horizon, the Kentucky State Police are urging motorists to be vigilant about the potential hazards of driving in fog. Fog can significantly impair visibility, creating challenging conditions that require special safety precautions to navigate safely.
Trooper Katan Parker emphasized the importance of adjusting driving habits in foggy conditions. He advised against using high beams, as they can reflect off the fog and further reduce visibility. “Never use your high beams. High beams make it more difficult to see,” Parker stated. Instead, he recommended utilizing low beams or fog lights to increase visibility for both the driver and surrounding vehicles.
To enhance safety, drivers are encouraged to remain alert, avoid distractions such as cellphones, and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Parker also suggested using road markings to aid navigation when visibility is compromised. “If you’re driving down and there are two lanes, look at the lines,” he explained. “Even though you can’t see down the road, the lines can help you stay in your lane.”
The dangers of fog were underscored by a recent accident reported by the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office, which occurred on I-65 early Monday morning due to fog-related conditions. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the increased risks associated with poor visibility.
Parker noted, “Fog creates unpredictable driving situations that increase collision risks. You never know what’s in front of you at a certain distance. There’s a higher possibility for collisions due to the fact that you can’t see.”
