Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled a first look at Sophie Turner portraying Lara Croft in the highly anticipated “Tomb Raider” television series, based on the beloved video game franchise. The image, featuring Turner in Lara’s signature shorts and top, along with red sunglasses, comes as production on the series officially kicks off.

Turner takes on the iconic role that has previously been brought to life by Angelina Jolie in the 2001 film “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and its 2003 sequel, as well as by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 movie “Tomb Raider.” Her casting was officially announced in 2025, marking a significant milestone in her career following her fame as Sansa Stark in “Game of Thrones.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for creating and starring in “Fleabag,” serves as the creator and executive producer of Prime Video’s “Tomb Raider.” The cast also includes notable actors such as Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, and Martin Bobb-Semple, among others.

The “Tomb Raider” video game franchise, which began in 1996, follows the adventurous archaeologist Lara Croft and has drawn comparisons to the “Indiana Jones” film series. The franchise has continued to evolve, with a successful reboot released in 2013.

Expressing her excitement about the role, Turner stated, “I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many — and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.”

Waller-Bridge echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the significance of creating a series centered around a character that resonates deeply with fans. She remarked, “Get your artifacts out … Croft is coming.”

The new series aligns with the growing trend of successful video game adaptations, following the acclaim of HBO’s “The Last of Us” and box office hits such as “A Minecraft Movie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” Prime Video is also developing a “God of War” television series, further expanding the landscape of video game narratives in mainstream media. The future of video game adaptations, especially with strong female leads like Turner, looks promising and exciting for fans and audiences alike.
