Nintendo has unveiled the first set of photos from its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, showcasing the film’s stars, Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link, in their official costumes. These images were revealed on the Nintendo Today app, marking the company’s confirmation of the production’s commencement.

Reports earlier this week indicated that filming had initiated in New Zealand, with fans already speculating about the project’s shooting location after unofficial videos surfaced on social media, featuring Bragason, Ainsworth, and another actor in a forest scene. The illustrated backdrop of Hyrule in the photos cleverly utilizes New Zealand’s picturesque landscape.

In the latest images, Bragason’s portrayal of Zelda dons blue robes reminiscent of her outfit from the critically acclaimed game, Breath of the Wild, while Ainsworth’s Link bears a striking resemblance to the character’s appearance in Twilight Princess, complete with a dark green tunic.

While no official word has been given, there are rumors that Dichen Lachman, known for her role in Succession, will portray Impa, Zelda’s loyal aide. Nintendo announced the live-action project in November 2023, with Shigeru Miyamoto, the company’s iconic creative leader, producing alongside Avi Arad, the former CEO of Marvel Studios. Directing duties fall to Wes Ball, famous for his work on Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, with the screenplay crafted by Derek Connolly, known for Jurassic World.

The Legend of Zelda is set to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. This release date comes amidst Nintendo’s announcement of plans to maintain a “consistent release cadence” for video game films over the coming years, building on the success of the recent Super Mario Movie.

With the film’s production underway and early glimpses of its visual style, anticipation grows for what promises to be an exciting addition to the world of video game adaptations.
