Members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and the Fiji Police Force are preparing for the much-anticipated Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl, an event where athletes will showcase their skills while many of their colleagues continue to perform essential duties nationwide. This dynamic competition not only underscores the rivalry between the two forces but also highlights the commitment of those who maintain vital operations throughout the festivities.
Jovilisi Leweniqila, chair of the Sukuna Bowl organizing committee, expressed gratitude towards both the athletes participating and the support teams working behind the scenes. “It’s a privilege for a few to participate in the games, but it’s the unseen efforts of the others that truly keep us going,” he remarked. Current social issues, such as drug prevention and HIV awareness, remain significant, further emphasizing that the responsibilities of both forces go well beyond the match.
Leweniqila encouraged the public to rally behind both teams during the event, which is expected to attract large crowds, particularly in the Northern division. Anticipation is high for a packed Subrail Park on Thursday and Friday. The competition kicked off with cricket at Albert Park in Suva, and activities will continue with boxing scheduled later, while soccer and rugby matches will be broadcast live on FBC Sports.
This year’s Ratu Sukuna Bowl adopts the theme “Stronger Together: Building a Drug-Free Nation through Family, Unity, and Reconciliation,” reflecting a commitment that extends beyond the competitions themselves. Major General Jone Kalouniwai, commander of the RFMF, highlighted that the event symbolizes a collective effort toward national unity and resilience. The competition strives to inspire not just athletic rivalry but a united front against pressing social issues afflicting the community.
The camaraderie and discipline exhibited during the competitions serve as a powerful reminder of the collective strength of the forces in creating a better Fiji. The emphasis on drug awareness and community support resonates throughout the events, showcasing how each athlete’s effort contributes to a larger societal cause.
The Ratu Sukuna Bowl transcends being just a sporting event; it embodies the hopes and aspirations of a nation committed to building a brighter and healthier future. Engaging the community in these activities is pivotal in fostering unity against the challenges facing Fiji today, highlighting a shared vision for progress and resilience.
