The Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s has evolved from its humble origins into a vital element of grassroots rugby in Fiji, as noted by its founder, Jone Vuki. Currently speaking from Australia, Vuki reflected on the tournament’s remarkable growth since it began in late 2007.

“The tournament started very small in 2007 and has now grown to be the biggest in the world,” Vuki expressed with pride. He pointed out that the Wairiki 7s distinguishes itself by offering a variety of sporting events, setting it apart from other tournaments worldwide.

Vuki elaborated, “No other tournament organises sevens rugby like we are doing.” In addition to rugby, the event features competitions in men’s and women’s volleyball, women’s and mixed netball, and a junior ruggers segment. This diverse programming attracts participants and spectators from various backgrounds, creating a lively and inclusive community atmosphere.

This year’s tournament has seen substantial growth, featuring participation from 21 men’s teams, 16 under-21 teams, and five women’s teams in the rugby competition that commenced yesterday. The tournament promises to conclude tomorrow with plenty of excitement still in store. This showcases not only the vibrant future of grassroots rugby in Fiji but also the event’s significance in bringing together different sporting interests, fostering unity and camaraderie among participants.
