Maikel Garcia and the Kansas City Royals are reportedly finalizing a five-year contract extension, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The agreement includes a club option for an additional sixth year, although the total financial value of the extension has not been disclosed.
The 25-year-old Garcia is set to enter his fifth MLB season in 2026, having spent his entire career with the Royals. Last season, he showcased his talent by posting a .286 batting average with a .351 on-base percentage and a .449 slugging percentage, contributing 16 home runs, 74 RBIs, and 23 stolen bases over 160 games. Unfortunately, the Royals finished third in the American League Central and have missed the postseason for nine of the last ten years.
Garcia earned his first All-Star selection last season and was also recognized as a Gold Glove Award winner, highlighting his defensive prowess. Primarily a third baseman, he has experience playing in both the outfield and shortstop positions.
Garcia’s journey with the Royals began when he signed as an international free agent at just 16 years old in 2016. He made his MLB debut in July 2022, but it wasn’t until the following season that he became a regular contributor to the team.
This extension marks a significant step for the Royals, as they have now secured the left side of their infield for the long term. With Bobby Witt Jr. and Garcia both under contract beyond 2028, the team is poised for a brighter future. The Royals’ commitment to these key players could signify a strategic investment in building a competitive roster moving forward.
