Traditional leaders in Fiji are expressing their support for the introduction of the country’s inaugural National Rural Development Policy, viewing it as a pivotal advancement in tackling enduring issues that rural and maritime communities face. During the consultation held for the Northern Division, Tui Macuata and former President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere highlighted that true development transcends mere infrastructure and services—it must uphold dignity, bolster self-reliance, and ensure equitable progress across all communities.
Ratu Wiliame reflected on previous rural development efforts, such as the Integrated Rural Development Framework of 2009, noting that they fell short in addressing ongoing challenges like access to clean water, dependable transportation, effective communication, and essential services, particularly impacting areas in Macuata, Bua, and Cakaudrove.
He emphasized that the new policy should honor the significance of land and sea, reinforce social bonds, and forge pathways for youth to prosper within their communities. Ratu Wiliame believes the National Rural Development Policy (NRDP) can fulfill this vision by empowering local provinces and districts, enhancing service delivery, and facilitating partnerships that can lead to tangible improvements at the community level.
This policy signifies a move towards a more inclusive and community-focused approach, prioritizing collaboration among communities, traditional leaders, governmental bodies, the private sector, and development partners.
