The Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji (SSDPS Fiji) has expressed its support for the Consumer Council of Fiji’s concerns regarding misleading food preparation practices in restaurants, particularly affecting consumers who adhere to specific dietary restrictions for religious reasons.

National President Dhirendra Nand highlighted the importance of transparency in food preparation, stating that it is a fundamental right of consumers, especially for those following vegetarian diets dictated by their faith. “Transparency is not optional — it is a fundamental requirement. Consumers have the right to know exactly what they are eating, especially when it concerns religious or cultural dietary restrictions. Misleading practices like these compromise faith-based choices and cannot be ignored,” Mr. Nand emphasized.

In response to these concerns, the Sabha is urging relevant authorities to investigate food preparation practices and hold accountable those found to be in breach. In an effort to enhance trust among the community, SSDPS Fiji is also launching a certification program specifically for vegetarian products. This initiative aims to help Sanatan followers easily identify food items that meet Sanatan dietary standards.

The organization has called on both the Sanatan community and the wider public to support this certification initiative by choosing products that bear the SSDPS Fiji Certification. “This will not only protect consumers but also encourage businesses to maintain transparency and respect for cultural and religious values,” the Sabha stated.

Mr. Nand characterized the certification as part of a larger movement urging businesses and regulatory authorities to prioritize clarity and accountability. “This is a call to action for both businesses and authorities: clarity, honesty, and respect for religious practices are non-negotiable. SSDPS Fiji will work tirelessly to ensure that vegetarian products are certified and trusted by our community nationwide,” he concluded.

This proactive approach seeks to create a more informed consumer base while reinforcing respect for religious values in food preparation practices across Fiji.
