The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has launched a series of public awareness sessions across the country to improve understanding of the recent electricity tariff revision. The initiative aims to provide customers with an avenue to address their queries related to the changes and comprehend the potential financial impact on their individual electricity bills.

Fatiaki Gibson, the Chief Executive of the Electric Fiji Limited (EFL), attended one of the sessions in Nadi, where he emphasized EFL’s collaboration with the FCCC to address public concerns effectively. Gibson noted that EFL’s participation in the program allows for a clear explanation of technical details regarding how the tariff revision affects customer billing.

The outreach program’s primary focus is on domestic customers seeking insight into the tariff changes. Gibson reassured attendees that the tariff increase has been designed with caution to protect vulnerable communities, including small and medium enterprises. “From EFL’s perspective, we’ve been very conscious about this tariff revision. We must look after vulnerable people and communities,” he stated, stressing that the increase will have a minimal effect on domestic users, particularly those with low energy consumption.

Despite this, some members of the public expressed skepticism surrounding the revision. Residents and businesses in Nadi voiced concerns that the tariff hike could lead to higher costs for goods and services, ultimately burdening all consumers.

The FCCC’s public awareness initiative concluded its nationwide sessions today but plans to host additional sessions from December 29th to 30th, offering continued opportunities for community engagement and education on the tariff changes. This effort reflects a commitment to transparency and consumer protection as Fiji navigates changes in its energy landscape.
