The Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in Suva is currently grappling with significant infrastructure challenges, but the Fijian government is dedicated to revitalizing the facility to better cater to the healthcare needs of the community. Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu announced that plans are underway for the construction of a new hospital, supported by the Australian government, alongside ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade the existing infrastructure.
Minister Lalabalavu noted that CWMH has been affected by years of neglect, leading to various infrastructure issues that impede its service delivery. He emphasized the critical role that CWMH plays as one of the main referral facilities in Fiji and the surrounding region, asserting, “The continuity of service for our people is paramount.” The government is committed to ensuring that the hospital remains functional while addressing its aging infrastructure.
Recent challenges were highlighted when sluice water overflowed into two operating rooms, showing inadequate discharge materials such as bed sheets. Fortunately, the maintenance team responded quickly, resolving the blockage and restoring normal drainage. This incident underscored the urgent need for infrastructure enhancements, with Minister Lalabalavu revealing that the hospital’s facilities were not designed to accommodate the current population and service demands.
In a strategic development approach, the government plans to improve the existing hospital while simultaneously preparing for the construction of a new facility. A site has been secured in Valelevu for the new hospital, which is estimated to cost nearly $2 billion. The Australian government has pledged $14.5 million to tackle urgent infrastructure needs at CWMH, a crucial initiative to ensure that the hospital can continue to deliver essential healthcare services during this transition.
An infrastructure assessment of the hospital has revealed that six buildings are structurally unsafe and may need demolition or major reconstruction, while seven others require immediate repairs. These findings highlight the lack of consistent maintenance over the years and emphasize the importance of a comprehensive redevelopment plan.
In an effort to address these challenges, Australia is collaborating with local authorities to formulate a master plan for CWMH, focusing on both immediate repairs and long-term improvements.
