Fiji is garnering acclaim for its vibrant linguistic diversity, particularly through current efforts to enhance Hindi education within the country. During the recent Manak Hindi Conference, Indian High Commissioner Sunit Mehta highlighted the diverse expressions of Hindi found across various regions in both India and Fiji. He pointed out that the variations in dialect are natural and evolve over time, showcasing the language’s adaptability.
Mehta stressed that languages like Hindi are dynamic, evolving with their geographical and cultural surroundings. He pointed out that the variations between Fiji Hindi and Standard Hindi reflect a living language that thrives through change. He emphasized the significance of Manak Hindi, or Standard Hindi, as a crucial component of linguistic identity, playing an essential role in education, business, and the arts on the international platform.
At the conference, he remarked, “We are here to discuss the evolving needs of Standard Hindi. It is unique as it provides an identity for the language and strengthens our global presence.” He noted that while Fiji Hindi is widely spoken in homes and communities, it serves as an important cultural connector and that both Manak Hindi and Fiji Hindi coexist complementarily.
The discussions also called for efforts to maintain and promote the Hindi language among younger generations. Hindi Parishad Fiji President Kamlesh Arya conveyed his aspirations to rekindle interest in Hindi among youth, reinforcing a commitment to the language’s future significance in society.
Encouraging youth engagement, the High Commissioner advocated for the use of various digital platforms—including blogs, social media, and online storytelling—arguing that Hindi is more than a means of communication; it is a reflection of cultural identity, thoughts, and emotions.
This initiative represents a hopeful advancement towards cultivating a deeper appreciation for linguistic diversity and cultural heritage in Fiji, ensuring that Hindi continues to thrive for generations to come.
