Fiji’s First Major Data Center to Kick Off in 2026

Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) has announced that the construction of its first major data center will commence in 2026 and is expected to span approximately 24 months. Shalvin Narayan, TFL’s head of ICT, shared this information during the 2025 EXTRA Fiji Architecture Conference and Trade Exhibition held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Nadi.

This ambitious project aims to establish a substantial facility that will not only serve Fiji but will also play a crucial role in enhancing the technological landscape of the Pacific region. Mr. Narayan emphasized the thorough design cycle underwent for the project, stating, “We have gone through a full design cycle since it’s a very large facility first for Fiji and the region.” He noted that this involved meticulous consideration of various factors, including environmental impact and power availability.

While he refrained from disclosing the project’s overall financial value—indicating that this would be determined by TFL’s finance team—Narayan’s comments underscore the significance of the data center in advancing digital infrastructure.

This development comes on the heels of other initiatives aimed at improving Fiji’s telecommunications framework, including a $10 million investment in a 102-kilometer fiber cable project across Vanua Levu. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized that such investments make digital opportunities more accessible, especially for isolated communities.

As part of ongoing efforts to bolster Fiji’s digital infrastructure, TFL recently announced plans for the inaugural Pacific Fiber Conference 2025, which will bring together telecom leaders and technology providers to discuss strategies for enhancing connectivity across the Pacific Islands. These initiatives signal a hopeful trajectory for Fiji, as it moves toward becoming more digitally interconnected, with the potential to foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
