The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has informed customers that recent heavy rainfall and significant flooding, attributed to Tropical Cyclone Urmil, have disrupted several water supply operations, particularly in the Western Division. The continuous downpour has led to flooding in various raw water sources and facilities, resulting in increased turbidity levels and clogged intake screens, while also posing access challenges to essential treatment plants and pumping stations.

The affected areas include critical sites such as the Narara and Nakasia intakes, Qalau and Nasivi raw water pump stations, Waica intake, as well as Varaciva and Waiwai dams, and the Keiaysi River intake. Consequently, the water production capacity in Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Sigatoka has been temporarily reduced, which may result in intermittent supply disruptions and lower water pressure, and in some cases, the need for water rationing.

Despite these challenges, WAF has assured that most major water treatment plants and distribution systems are still operational. Crews are diligently monitoring the systems, managing production, and diverting supply to ensure essential areas continue to receive water. Water carting services have been deployed to assist affected households, businesses, and critical services.

WAF noted that inspection and restoration work cannot begin in several locations until it is safe, as ongoing severe weather has created unsafe access routes. Once conditions improve, teams will be sent out for clean-up, repairs, and restoration efforts. Customers, especially those in low-pressure and elevated areas in the Western Division, may continue to face temporary interruptions until the floodwaters recede and standard operations resume.

In light of the situation, WAF has advised customers to conserve water, store enough for essential needs, and maintain clean and covered storage tanks. The authority also encourages the community to report major leaks or supply issues through its customer service channels. WAF expresses gratitude for the public’s patience and understanding as teams work tirelessly to mitigate the impacts of the severe weather and strive for complete restoration of services.
