Communities throughout Fiji are calling for transparency and fairness ahead of the upcoming election, prompting the government to actively seek input from villages, councils, and youth groups. This initiative aims to ensure that all citizens have a say in shaping the future of their country.
In a recent media interview, Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, reiterated the government’s dedication to a credible, fair, and transparent electoral process as part of an ongoing constitutional review. He stressed the importance of institutional strength, community involvement, and public input as critical components of Fiji’s democratic framework.
Turaga highlighted the government’s efforts to consult widely, extending outreach beyond traditional venues to hear directly from citizens in their local villages. He made a notable point, saying, “It’s important to hear your voice. Putting it on social media does not count. It’s what the people of Fiji want if they choose a new government, let’s respect that.”
As for the election schedule, Turaga confirmed that preparations are in motion for the next general election, which could occur anytime from June, with the last possible date set for February 7, 2027. He outlined, “The timeline is this. By June, we can have our election. And the last day of the election is February 7, 2027. It must be credible, it must be fair.”
Furthermore, Turaga addressed the constitutional review, indicating that it will take into account the perspectives of minority groups, youth, and various stakeholders. The goal is to maintain the rule of law while updating certain provisions to align with current realities. He indicated that the process, supported by legal expertise from the Commonwealth, would be both technical and inclusive.
While noting that some constitutional provisions are contentious, Turaga assured that his team is prepared to address these when the appropriate motion is brought forward, reflecting the government’s commitment to seeing the process through.
With the electoral timeline established and consultations actively being conducted, the government expresses its determination to ensure that the upcoming election and constitutional review align with the will of the people, enhance democratic institutions, and build trust in Fiji’s governance.
