Residents of the Waica, Waitete, and Naniu communities in Vanua Levu are experiencing a significant improvement in their water supply thanks to a generous donation from the Health Ministry, which provided three water tanks under its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Program.

Local villager Polonia Raiova expressed her gratitude, indicating that the installation of these tanks represents a beacon of hope for brighter days ahead. She recounted the challenges her family faced in managing household chores, often resorting to washing laundry and dishes at relatives’ homes on a nearby island due to the unreliable water supply. Previously, the community sourced water from a Catholic Church property in Tutu, but they frequently dealt with prolonged disruptions due to broken pipes.

Raiova voiced her sentiments on behalf of the entire community, particularly the women, in thanking the Ministry for providing the tanks. These tanks will serve as a crucial resource, enabling residents to store water during times of drought or when water services are interrupted.

Community elder Atonio Radrodro reminisced about the past when their elders relied on freshwater springs near the seashore, which could only be accessed during low tide, emphasizing the importance of this donation. He affirmed that the tanks will greatly benefit families across the communities.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu was responsible for the donation and took the opportunity to encourage residents to take care of the tanks and use them effectively. This initiative not only addresses the current water supply challenges faced by the communities but also instills a sense of community and responsibility among residents.
