The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has laid out ambitious plans for the advancement of women’s rugby, set to commence in January next year. These initiatives aim to elevate the Fijiana teams while strategically preparing for the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup cycle.

Work for these plans began in October, with the FRU engaging in discussions to secure more high-quality matches for the national women’s 15s team. FRU Board Chairman John Sanday revealed that negotiations with the Head of High-Performance Unit for World Rugby have resulted in a promising commitment for a minimum of six top-tier games for the Fijiana team next year.

The Fijiana’s performances in the last two Women’s Rugby World Cups have caught the attention of the rugby community. Sanday noted that World Rugby has expressed satisfaction with the efforts showcased by the Fijian women, highlighting that the recent tournament was not only a remarkable success but also beneficial for the future of women’s rugby.

Sanday emphasized the FRU’s dedication to investing in the women’s game, aiming to make the Fijiana a formidable force at the Women’s Rugby World Cup scheduled to be held in Australia in 2029. Additionally, the FRU will continue its annual sevens programs for both women and men, recognizing them as essential pathways for player development into national teams.

This proactive approach signifies a commitment to nurturing talent and growing the sport within the region, fostering positive prospects for women’s rugby in Fiji. With a strong foundation being laid and increased support from World Rugby, the future looks bright for Fijiana as they strive for excellence on the global stage.
