A pivotal bilateral meeting aimed at enhancing the relationship between Fiji and the United States was held in Suva today. The talks focused on boosting economic cooperation, ensuring regional stability, and reinforcing the shared values that connect the two nations.

During a traditional welcome ceremony at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Christopher Landau, the US Deputy Secretary of State, conveyed greetings from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He expressed his appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality he received upon his arrival.

Following the ceremony, Landau met with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and other senior government officials. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Fiji and the broader Pacific region, underscoring Fiji’s pivotal role in regional security and its valuable contributions to the international community.

In his remarks, Landau highlighted the alignment of values between Fiji and the United States, including faith, democratic governance, and the importance of open communication. He emphasized the US’s commitment to being a proud partner of Fiji as they move forward.

Prime Minister Rabuka welcomed Landau’s advocacy for a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact, which aims to deliver transformative benefits to both countries. This engagement is viewed as a significant milestone in Fiji-US relations, with the potential to address urgent challenges and development priorities.

Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s dedication to strengthening the bilateral relationship and enhancing trade and economic cooperation, along with initiatives designed to improve the quality of life for families in both countries. He confirmed Fiji’s commitment to working closely with the United States and other like-minded nations to promote regional stability and sustainable development, in line with their vision for a peaceful Pacific.

The leaders concluded that their strong partnership, rooted in a long history of shared values and collaboration, would continue to flourish. They emphasized ongoing cooperation in vital areas such as private sector-led economic development, maritime and health security, and joint efforts to combat transnational crime, including drug trafficking and illegal fishing practices. This partnership embodies a positive and hopeful vision for future progress and mutual benefits for both Fiji and the United States.
