Labour shortages, investment delays, and hotel capacity issues have been identified as significant impediments to the growth of tourism in Fiji. Despite these challenges, optimism remains high as the 3rd Fiji Tourism Convention is currently taking place at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, Nadi.
During her opening remarks at the event, Convention Chair Jenny Seeto emphasized the convention’s critical role in uplifting the tourism industry, highlighting the need to address pressing challenges and explore innovative strategies for the future. The two-day convention expects to draw approximately 300 participants, including hoteliers, tour operators, community representatives, tourism associations, development partners, academic institutions, and government officials. This gathering aims to provide a platform for stakeholders to assess the current state of the tourism sector and devise new directions for its growth.
Seeto noted the significance of the day for the tourism sector, which she described as the backbone of Fiji’s economy, a driver of job creation, and a vital element of national identity. She remarked, “The Fiji Tourism Convention is more than just an annual gathering; it is our collective space to reflect, recalibrate, and reimagine the direction of tourism in Fiji.”
Despite the challenges that persist, she highlighted the sector’s remarkable adaptability, pointing to nearly one million visitor arrivals last year as evidence of its resilience. Seeto asserted that the industry’s performance reflects a successful collaborative effort, suggesting that unity among stakeholders will be crucial for fostering future growth.
As the convention continues, the focus on overcoming challenges and enhancing the tourism experience indicates a promising outlook for Fiji’s tourism sector. With ongoing discussions and a shared commitment to improvement, there is hope for a revitalized industry that continues to support the nation’s economy and cultural identity.
