Fiji is preparing to host the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM) from February 9 to 12, 2026, an event that will bring together law ministers and attorneys general from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries. This meeting aims to strengthen legal collaboration and enhance access to justice.
The theme for the gathering, “Anchoring Justice in a Changing Tide: Strengthening the Rule of Law for a Resilient Future,” reflects Fiji’s commitment to legal development in the region. Organized by the Republic of Fiji, with the Office of the Attorney General overseeing the proceedings, the CLMM represents a vital platform for discussing advancements in legal cooperation and equal access to justice.
According to a recent communiqué from The Commonwealth, key discussion points during the meeting will include the integration of technology in the justice system, model contracts for governance of natural resources, tools for effective legal reform, and enhanced protection of fundamental rights. The outcomes of this assembly are expected to shape the initiatives of the Commonwealth Secretariat regarding the Declaration on Access to Justice and to influence the agenda of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda later in 2026.
This meeting signifies not only Fiji’s burgeoning role in promoting legal frameworks within the Commonwealth but also underscores the collective commitment of member nations to uphold the rule of law and improve justice systems globally. The anticipated reforms stemming from this meeting hold the potential to create more equitable societies, ultimately enhancing justice for all citizens across the Commonwealth.
