The Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation of Japan (OFCF Japan) has successfully concluded a refrigeration training program designed to enhance the capabilities of coastal fisheries across the Pacific region. This initiative took place at the National Fisheries College in Papua New Guinea from November 17 to 28, 2025, and saw participation from technicians representing eight Pacific Island countries.
The program primarily focused on equipping participants with practical skills essential for the operation and maintenance of ice-making machines, which are vital for local fisheries. Among the attendees was Jeke Dute, a technical officer from the Lautoka Ice Plant in Fiji, who noted the significant benefits of the training. The curriculum emphasized hands-on experience with actual equipment and introduced a structured five-step fault-finding process to improve problem-solving skills and maintenance efficiency among the participants.
Mr. Dute expressed that the training greatly boosted his confidence in promptly addressing machinery breakdowns, a crucial skill in maintaining ice production. This program builds on a previous initiative from 2023, when the Lautoka Ice Plant was equipped with three ice machines and a generator donated by Japan. Since the installation, the plant has been producing between 50 to 100 tonnes of ice monthly, which has profoundly benefited local fishermen. With reliable access to ice during their fishing trips, these fishers can reach diverse fishing grounds, preserve the quality of their catch, and command higher prices in the market, ultimately enhancing their livelihoods.
OFCF Japan’s commitment to supporting coastal fisheries is evident in its focus on strengthening the technical capacities necessary for the sustainable operation of ice-making facilities. The organization aims to continue its efforts by providing skills development and technical guidance, ensuring a reliable supply of ice for local fishers. This initiative not only supports the sustainability of the fishing industry but also bolsters the resilience of communities dependent on fisheries in the region. By enhancing these capabilities, OFCF Japan is playing a crucial role in promoting economic development and food security in the Pacific.
