Westpac Fiji, in collaboration with Mastercard, has launched Fiji’s pioneering card payment solution for taxis, marking a significant stride towards a cashless and inclusive economy. This innovative system was introduced with 22 taxis operating at both Nadi and Nausori airports, allowing passengers to conveniently pay their fares using any major credit or debit card. The initiative is designed to enhance the payment process, making it quicker, safer, and more convenient for both drivers and passengers.
Yvonne Breckterfield, Westpac Fiji’s Head of Global Transaction Solutions, pointed out that taxi operators have expressed strong support for this evolution in payment methods. She noted that many modern travelers prefer digital transactions, as this approach eliminates the need to carry cash. Faraaz Mustapha, a taxi driver at Nadi Airport, highlighted that the timing of this rollout aligns perfectly with the peak travel season, optimizing operations and helping to attract a greater number of customers.
Ruth Riviere, Mastercard’s Country Manager for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, remarked that this initiative represents a landmark development in advancing digital payments throughout the Pacific region. The partnership between Westpac and Mastercard not only aims to modernize Fiji’s payment infrastructure but also seeks to empower local businesses while enhancing customer experiences through secure and contactless technology.
This advancement follows Westpac’s previous collaborations, notably with Verifone, to enhance payment solutions across various platforms. The ongoing focus on digital transactions is indicative of a broader trend toward cashless operations in Fiji, including recent initiatives by Fiji Link, which are also moving towards cashless operations in domestic travel.
As Fiji embraces these technological shifts, the future looks promising for local businesses and the overall economy. These developments signify progress toward a more efficient, secure, and customer-friendly financial ecosystem that benefits both residents and visitors. The commitment to advancing digital payment solutions reflects a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s economy, paving the way for more inclusive and sustainable practices in the region.
