Sony PlayStation has made the surprising announcement that it is shutting down Bluepoint Studios, just a couple of years after acquiring the team to enhance its first-party game development lineup. Approximately 70 employees will be affected by this closure, as confirmed by a spokesperson for PlayStation.

In their statement, the spokesperson praised Bluepoint Games for its talented team and technical expertise, which have contributed significantly to the PlayStation community through exceptional gaming experiences. “We thank them for their passion, creativity, and craftsmanship,” the spokesperson added.

The decision to close Bluepoint follows a review of business operations at Sony. Although the studio successfully released the highly regarded Demon Souls remake during the initial launch period of the PS5, it faced challenges in finding new projects after the cancellation of a live service God of War game last year. Despite the team developing new game pitches throughout 2025, Sony ultimately decided against moving forward with any of these projects.

Before becoming part of PlayStation Studios in 2021, Bluepoint was celebrated for its exceptional remastering capabilities. The studio gained acclaim with remakes and remasters of franchises such as Uncharted, Gravity Rush, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid. Ironically, Sony has recently announced the remakes of the original God of War trilogy, raising questions about the timing of Bluepoint’s closure, as they appeared to be an ideal fit for such a project.

This unexpected shutdown underscores the ongoing adjustments within Sony, particularly after significant investments in canceled live service initiatives over recent years. While disappointing for both employees and fans, there is potential for Sony to refocus its efforts on projects with a clear direction moving forward.
