Opposition MP Premila Kumar has criticized Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka for his delayed action in dismissing Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru amid allegations related to the Fiji Sports Council. The Prime Minister made the decision to dismiss Saukuru, citing serious concerns over the misuse of public office, and stated that it was necessary to facilitate a thorough and independent investigation by the Fiji Police Force into the allegations regarding abuse of office.
Rabuka emphasized the importance of integrity in public office and the management of public resources, which are fundamental principles his government expects all officials to adhere to. However, Kumar expressed her belief that the Prime Minister’s intervention comes too late, especially since an independent investigation by the Fiji Sports Council is already in progress.
Kumar remarked, “Prime Minister Rabuka, your action comes rather late. The independent investigation by the Fiji Sports Council which is already underway will reveal the conduct of Minister Jese Saukuru.” She further suggested that the Prime Minister’s decision to assume control of the Youth and Sports portfolio seems more focused on mitigating damage rather than demonstrating strong leadership.
Criticizing what she sees as a recurring issue with Rabuka’s decision-making process, Kumar stated, “This pattern of delayed decision-making continues to undermine confidence in your leadership. Strong leadership requires timely action, not last-minute interventions once issues have already escalated.”
This situation highlights the ongoing challenges within the government regarding accountability and the management of public resources. The forthcoming results of the Fiji Sports Council’s investigation may shed light on the allegations and contribute to necessary reforms for better governance. As public scrutiny continues, the actions taken by Rabuka and the outcome of the investigations will be crucial in shaping the public’s trust in government leadership.
