Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made a heartfelt appeal to the people of Fiji to unite in the fight against violence directed at women and girls. In a recent video posted on his social media channels, he invited citizens to join a solidarity initiative by wearing black every Thursday to visibly show their commitment to this crucial cause.
Mr. Rabuka, wearing a black safari suit along with a pin representing the campaign, emphasized that while Thursday’s black attire is an important gesture, the battle against violence should be a daily endeavor. He stated, “Today, I’m wearing my black safari suit and the pin that the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection has asked us to wear on Thursdays in our fight against violence against women and girls, and against rape and abuse.”
The Prime Minister called on Fijians to support various positive initiatives throughout the year, likening this movement to health observances like Pinktober, which promotes awareness for cancer. He urged individuals to maintain their focus on significant issues year-round, advocating, “Do not think about cancer only in October; think about it the whole year.” This sentiment underlines the importance of consistent action and support for those affected by violence and injustice.
In addition to addressing violence against women and girls, Mr. Rabuka paid tribute to the Fijian soldiers who serve in peacekeeping missions, acknowledging their sacrifices and the experiences of their families. He remarked on the upcoming return of these soldiers and encouraged the community to remember their contributions. “In a few days’ time, we’ll be welcoming back our soldiers from peacekeeping duties, and after a while, we will forget them. But let us not forget what they have sacrificed,” he emphasized.
