As Fiji gears up to welcome the New Year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling on all users of the road to remain vigilant, cautious, and responsible as celebrations can lead to increased traffic and heightened risks of accidents. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that the New Year should be embraced as a moment of joy and unity, not one marked by tragedy.

In light of the celebrations, he issued a strong warning regarding the practice of throwing water at moving vehicles, a tradition that has gained traction during festivities. Mr. Rokosawa cautioned that such actions can distract drivers, impair their visibility, and potentially lead to loss of control. What might be perceived as harmless revelry can lead to catastrophic outcomes for drivers, passengers, and bystanders.

Motorists are reminded to adhere to speed limits, refrain from risky overtaking maneuvers, and avoid driving under the influence or when fatigued. “The Authority has identified speeding and drink-driving as significant contributors to serious road incidents during this festive period,” he stated. He further remarked, “No celebration justifies putting your life or the lives of others in jeopardy. It is essential for drivers to slow down, stay focused, and ensure they are fit to drive, particularly when on long journeys or during late hours.”

Mr. Rokosawa also stressed the importance of passenger responsibility in fostering road safety, urging them to be conscious of their wellbeing and to influence drivers towards safer driving practices. The ongoing emphasis on safety serves as a reminder that the joy of the festivities can coexist with responsible behavior on the roads, fostering a safer environment for all during this spirited season.
