President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu formally appointed two new ambassadors at a ceremony at State House today, marking a pivotal moment for Fiji’s diplomatic efforts. Mr. Jesoni Vitusagavulu has been appointed as Fiji’s Ambassador to the State of Israel, while Mr. Laitia Tamata will serve as Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations (PRUNOG).

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and family members of the newly appointed ambassadors, highlighting the significance of these roles in elevating Fiji’s international representation.

Mr. Vitusagavulu arrives in his new role with extensive diplomatic and developmental experience. He previously served as Fiji’s Ambassador to the United States, Canada, and Mexico from 2005 to 2007, where he not only rebranded the Fijian Embassy in Washington, D.C., but also secured vital support from various foundations and created job opportunities for Fijian citizens in Canada.

Mr. Tamata complements this appointment with his rich background as a development practitioner and legal adviser, specializing in international law, human rights, and environmental law. Having trained in international diplomacy in the late 1980s, Mr. Tamata also has experience working with international operations, including the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Currently, he is a Senior Manager at Fiji National University, sharing his expertise by lecturing on law-related subjects.

These appointments reflect Fiji’s ambition to strengthen its international relations and address pressing global challenges. With their proven track records, both ambassadors are well-equipped to enhance Fiji’s presence and influence on the global stage, fostering a hopeful future for the nation’s diplomatic endeavors.
