Fiji Crime Falls Sharply Across All Divisions as Drug Crackdown Gains Momentum

Fiji has seen a significant decline in its overall crime rate, recording an 18 percent drop in the first quarter of the year, according to newly released data from the Fiji Police Force. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu announced that there were 4,049 reported criminal cases from August to October, down from 4,960 cases during the same period last year. This positive trend reflects coordinated police operations and intensified efforts in drug enforcement.

The statistics revealed decreasing crime rates across all Fijian divisions, with the Southern, Western, Eastern, and Central areas reporting falls, although the Northern Division experienced a slight increase of three percent. Importantly, serious crimes dropped by 35 percent across all divisions, with notable improvements in crimes against vulnerable populations. Offenses against women fell by 10 percent, while crimes against children decreased by an impressive 34 percent.

Despite these encouraging figures, Commissioner Tudravu expressed concern over persistent domestic assaults and sexual offenses, highlighting that cases involving women numbered 231, down from 245 last year. Continued vigilance is necessary, especially regarding ongoing incidents of rape, indecent assault, and domestic violence.

The crackdown on illicit drug offenses led to a 30 percent decline in related cases, largely attributed to Operation Sasamaki, through which police registered 334 drug cases, primarily for possession, as well as additional cases of cultivation and importation. This operation is set to continue nationwide, ensuring a thorough and persistent effort in tackling drug-related issues.

Tudravu reassured the public that the police would maintain their focus on high-risk crimes and continue to monitor areas with persistent offending to further enhance the sense of safety within communities. The recent statistics underscore the success of police initiatives, driven by community cooperation, which brings hope for ongoing safety improvements in Fiji. As the police refine their strategies and engage with the public, there remains potential for further reductions in crime, promoting a secure environment for all residents.
