Leaders in the business community are expressing significant concern over the proposed electricity tariff increase for 2025, a move highlighted by Lawrence Kumar, the president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In a recent discussion, Kumar voiced his dissatisfaction with the lack of prior consultations with business stakeholders regarding this critical issue.

Kumar stated, “This has actually landed upon us without prior consultations,” underscoring the feeling among local businesses that they were not sufficiently informed about the basis for the proposed tariff increase. He pointed out the necessity for proper dialogue before implementing such significant changes. “It feels like we put the cart before the horse, where consultations should have been done properly,” he remarked.

Members of the business community in Nadi have largely opposed the increase, advocating that it should be delayed to allow for thorough discussions. Kumar highlighted the need for comprehensive consultations and transparent data to clarify the rationale behind the tariff hike, ensuring both the business sector and the general public can grasp its implications.

Reflecting on past engagements, Kumar mentioned a consultation held by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) in 2023, where detailed information about future plans and justifications for potential tariff adjustments were shared. He noted that such transparency is noticeably absent in the latest proposals.

In light of these concerns, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced plans to engage with stakeholders, including the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation and the Nadi Chamber of Commerce. FCCC CEO Senikavika Jiuta has expressed a willingness to meet with the NCCI to discuss these urgent matters, offering to convene with the organization’s members.

These discussions between business representatives and regulatory authorities present an opportunity for improved understanding and may pave the way for a resolution that considers the perspectives of all involved. This proactive approach underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges, fostering a more inclusive dialogue that can lead to beneficial outcomes for both the business sector and consumers.
