The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall affecting several regions in the country. The alert primarily focuses on the interior and southern sections of Viti Levu, extending from Sigatoka along the Coral Coast to Navua. Additionally, southeastern areas of Vanua Levu, including southern Bua and Cakaudrove, are also under watch.

These unstable weather conditions are linked to a northerly wind flow, which is expected to trigger thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. The intense storms could lead to significant rainfall, raising the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas, within the coming hours.

Authorities are advising the public to take precautions by avoiding flooded creeks and drains. Residents are urged not to walk, cycle, or drive through floodwaters, and to unplug electrical appliances. Staying indoors and keeping children inside is also strongly recommended as the weather deteriorates.

The thunderstorm activity is predicted to continue until late afternoon or evening. A Tropical Disturbance designated as TD05F entered Fiji’s Area of Responsibility at 6 a.m. and is currently located northwest of New Caledonia. Although this system will eventually move southeast and leave Fiji’s area by tomorrow, it does not currently pose a direct threat to the islands.

The Nadi Weather Office is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed. They stress the importance of adhering to official Fiji Meteorological channels for accurate information and advise against relying on unverified sources. Preparedness and awareness are crucial as the nation grapples with the effects of severe weather phenomena. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, residents can better safeguard themselves and their families during this challenging time.
