A tropical disturbance known as TD09F, currently near Vanuatu, is gaining strength and is expected to become a tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours. While it is not anticipated to make a direct impact on Fiji, the system is forecasted to pass southwest of the island group over the weekend, potentially bringing severe weather.

Authorities have already issued a Heavy Rain Alert and a Strong Wind Alert for the Western Division and Kadavu. From Saturday, northwesterly winds up to 40 kilometers per hour are expected to increase, accompanied by the possibility of heavier gusts in squally conditions.

Officials have stressed the likelihood of significant consequences including flash flooding, river flooding, and potential damage to infrastructure. The strong winds pose a risk of snapping tree branches, damaging power lines, and affecting older or lightly constructed homes made from corrugated iron and timber, as well as other vulnerable structures.

The Fiji Meteorological Service is actively monitoring the situation and plans to release updated forecasts and warnings as it evolves. Residents in the regions expected to be affected are encouraged to stay alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

In the face of this weather event, community preparedness will be crucial to minimizing potential hazards and protecting lives and property.
