In Sigatoka, Fiji, significant strides are being made towards developing a drought-resistant tomato variety as part of a project initiated by the Taiwan Technical Mission. This initiative seeks to support farmers who have faced challenges due to extreme weather by introducing climate-smart agricultural practices.
The spotlight of this effort is on the Sun Rising Number 2 tomato variety, celebrated for its high yield and exceptional shipping quality. This tomato variety reaches maturity within approximately 95 days and boasts resistance to several local pest strains. Farmers participating in the program are receiving training to improve their skills and practical knowledge, enabling them to achieve stable yields and enhance their income throughout the varying conditions of hot and rainy seasons.
In addition to tomatoes, the farmers are also being educated on summer production cultivation techniques for other vegetables such as cabbage, capsicum, cucumber, eggplant, and lettuce. This educational workshop is part of a comprehensive five-year flagship project aimed at strengthening Fiji’s resilience to extreme weather while enhancing food security.
Key aspects of this project include the introduction of 12 climate-resilient varieties of fruits and vegetables, the establishment of two main demonstration centers in Sigatoka and Nausori, along with six regional sites to promote resilient farming models. Additionally, the project aims to create low-cost smart agricultural tools, such as automated irrigation controllers and compost monitoring sensors, designed specifically for smallholder farmers. With over 30 technical training sessions planned, the initiative is set to support 100 core farmers across 23 hectares of farmland.
The emphasis on resilience and adaptation in this project highlights a positive commitment to improving agricultural sustainability in Fiji, which offers farmers the opportunity to prosper even amid challenging climate conditions. This initiative not only aims to deliver immediate benefits but also fosters long-term strategies for food security in the region.
