Fiji has cast its vote in support of a United Nations General Assembly resolution advocating for an immediate, complete, and unconditional cessation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. This resolution was passed during the UN’s eleventh emergency special session held in New York on Tuesday.
A total of 107 countries, including Fiji, backed this measure, while 12 nations voted against it and 51 chose to abstain. Central to the resolution is the call for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace that aligns with international law and the principles outlined in the UN Charter, urging an end to the ongoing conflict.
By voting in favor of the resolution, Fiji aligns itself with the majority of UN member states advocating for renewed international efforts aimed at peacefully resolving the conflict. The war, which erupted in 2022, has had significant global ramifications, resulting in loss of life, displacement of civilians, and severe disruptions to food, energy, and economic security.
