Ethan Hawke recently reflected on his early career rivalry with fellow actor Billy Crudup during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Hawke shared insights about the competitive nature of auditions, revealing that he and Crudup often vied for the same roles as young actors trying to establish themselves in the industry.
During the show, which aired on February 4, Hawke pointed out Crudup’s portrait displayed on the set, reminiscing about how their relationship began. “You know what’s kind of funny is right behind me, you’ve got Billy Crudup who happens to be a friend of mine,” he remarked, highlighting the shift from competitors to friends. “But not at first because we used to audition for everything.”
Hawke described how he frequently encountered Crudup at auditions, adding, “I’d see him at every audition. I’d often have to be outside the room and listen to him do the scene before me. And he was so good! It was so irritating!” This friendly banter revealed the deeper truths of youthful rivalry, as Hawke recalled feeling that there wasn’t enough space for both of them to succeed.
The actor recounted a specific instance when he had to decline a role in a Tom Stoppard play, which ultimately went to Crudup, boosting his career significantly. “In fact, I was offered a play once — I think he knows this — and I had to say no to it because I was doing a movie. They gave him the part and then his career took off,” Hawke explained.
Hawke humorously lamented the missed opportunity, joking about wanting to alter the past to change their career trajectories. Fallon joined in on the jest, playfully suggesting they should “stop Billy Crudup! He’s too talented!”
Despite the competitive beginnings, Hawke took a moment to express deep admiration for Crudup’s talent, calling him “the real thing” in acting. Their journey reflects how professional rivalries can evolve into friendships, highlighting the importance of camaraderie and respect within the acting community.
