The United States Embassy in Majuro has announced the retirement of Ambassador Laura M. Stone, marking the end of a distinguished 35-year career in diplomacy. Her tenure was characterized by a strong commitment to enhancing relations between the United States and the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

During her time in office, Ambassador Stone worked diligently with the Marshallese government to further mutual interests outlined in the Compact of Free Association. Her focus was on advancing educational opportunities, healthcare access, infrastructure development, and improvements in public administration. Additionally, she played an instrumental role in ensuring that initiatives such as the Individual Support Distribution (ISD) and the Extraordinary Needs Distribution (END) directly benefitted the Marshallese communities.

Stone’s leadership significantly strengthened bilateral cooperation on maritime security and facilitated important discussions about the US nuclear legacy in the region. Reflecting on her time in the Marshall Islands, she remarked that it was “one of the greatest honours” of her career, emphasizing the progress made in ensuring that the Compact’s benefits reached the local population.

Looking to the future, Stone expressed hope for the enduring relationship between the United States and the Marshall Islands, suggesting a solid foundation for continued collaboration. Her diplomatic career also included notable positions in Washington and international assignments in Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Japan.

In the meantime, Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory D’Alesandro will step in as Chargé d’Affaires until a new ambassador is appointed, ensuring that diplomatic relations remain steady during this transition period.
