Following their impressive performance last year, where the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s basketball team secured the Southern Conference (SoCon) regular season title, the Mocs entered the conference tournament with high hopes, fueled by an 11-game winning streak. The Mocs aimed to solidify their place in the NCAA Tournament, knowing they had an alternative route through the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) should they not succeed.
However, the loss of all-conference forward Frank Champion just days before the SoCon Tournament disrupted their momentum, leading to a disappointing overtime defeat to Furman in the semifinals. Despite this setback, the team rebounded with an inspiring run to the NIT championship, bringing them national recognition.
As this season progressed, the Mocs faced challenges, including injuries to key players and the pressure of integrating nine new team members. Chosen as the preseason favorites to capture the title again, their campaign was marred by inconsistent performances, leading to a struggle for team identity and wins. Nevertheless, recent games saw Chattanooga showing promise, winning three of their last four contests leading up to the tournament.
Entering the SoCon tournament as the No. 8 seed, the Mocs finished the regular season tied with The Citadel at 7-11 in league play and held an overall record of 13-18. This marks the lowest seed for the Mocs since the 2017-18 season and only the second time in their history they have been seeded eighth. The top six teams received byes, so UTC will face The Citadel, with the winner going on to meet top-seeded ETSU in the quarterfinals.
The tournament will kick off on Friday at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C., where other matchups include No. 7 UNC Greensboro and No. 10 VMI competing for a chance to challenge No. 2 Wofford. The semifinals are set for Sunday with the championship game scheduled for Monday.
This year, there is no safety net like an NIT invite awaiting the Mocs should they fall short. Their path is straightforward but daunting: they must win four consecutive games to clinch the title. Historically, this is a challenge Chattanooga has met only seven times in 49 seasons at the SoCon tournament.
Encouragingly, the Mocs are 5-2 in play-in games and showed great resilience in their past tournaments, winning three straight games in their last appearance before falling to Furman. Despite the absence of star player Jake Stephens during conference play, his return before the tournament offers an essential boost to the team’s morale.
Chattanooga’s basketball history is steeped in success, with a pursuit of their 13th SoCon Tournament title. Since their first championship win in 1980, they have seen numerous highs, including multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.
As they prepare for this year’s tournament, the Mocs are eager to prove their mettle and strive to achieve victory against formidable foes. With a balanced and competitive league, the Mocs have every opportunity to make a significant impact, and a successful run would be a remarkable achievement for a team that has overcome challenges with determination and resilience. There’s an air of optimism surrounding their journey in Asheville, echoing past triumphs, and a hope that they might yet add another chapter to their storied basketball legacy.
