EAST TEXAS – A powerful storm system is set to impact East Texas this weekend, with another forecasted for next week, raising the possibility of severe thunderstorms, heavy rains, and strong winds. The National Weather Service has designated two periods of particular concern as First Alert Weather Days: from tonight through Saturday and again on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The initial storm system moving in from the west is expected to create conditions ripe for severe thunderstorms across the region. People can anticipate scattered severe thunderstorms to develop this evening and persist into Saturday. The primary threats associated with these storms include damaging winds, large hail, and the risk of isolated tornadoes. Although the strongest storms may initially develop northwest of the area, they are expected to push southeastward into East Texas overnight and into Saturday morning.

Alongside these storms, heavy rainfall is forecast, with widespread accumulations expected to be between 1 to 3 inches or more, especially in regions affected by slow-moving storms. This influx of rain is expected to help alleviate ongoing drought conditions, although it also raises the risk of flooding, particularly in areas where heavy downpours occur.

The most significant threat from severe weather is anticipated through Saturday morning, particularly in areas northwest of Interstate 30. As Saturday progresses, the intensity of the storms is expected to diminish, although isolated strong storms could still occur into the afternoon and evening.

Looking ahead to midweek, a second storm system is on track to approach East Texas by Tuesday and Wednesday. Currently situated over the southwestern United States, this system will combine with another from the north, creating favorable conditions for renewed severe thunderstorm activity. This setup could lead to another round of severe weather spanning from the southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley, with East Texas being positioned in an area where warm, moist air interacts with stronger upper-level winds, resulting in an unstable atmosphere.

Once again, heavy rainfall is expected, potentially exacerbating flooding concerns in areas where storms move slowly.

Residents are urged to keep an eye on updates from local news outlets like KLTV and KTRE throughout the weekend. It is important to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts—be it through television, mobile notifications, or weather radios. Additionally, individuals should review their severe weather safety plans, identify safe shelter locations, and ensure emergency supplies are readily accessible.

As the storm systems approach, this weather activity provides a critical opportunity for the region to receive much-needed moisture while also reminding residents to stay prepared and informed.
