Fear Won’t Silence Fiji’s Media at the FAME Awards

Doviverata Urges Fiji’s Media to Stand Firm as Awards Night Returns

Rosi Doviverata, president of the Fiji Media Association, delivered an inspiring address to the media community, urging the importance of standing firm in their role as representatives of Fiji, even in the face of adversity. Her passionate remarks were made during the Fiji Achievement in Media Excellence Awards (FAME Awards) ceremony held at the Novotel in Lami on Saturday evening. Doviverata expressed her deep appreciation for media professionals who have shown unwavering commitment to truth amidst the challenges posed by the Bainimarama government over the past 16 years.

She acknowledged the dedication of journalists, saying, “To all the newsrooms represented here tonight—every editor, photographer, designer, and producer—thank you for keeping the story of Fiji alive.” Doviverata recognized the personal sacrifices made by these individuals, noting their long hours and the emotional toll of reporting both the struggles and successes of the nation.

Throughout her speech, she emphasized the necessity of resisting the silencing effects of fear on their mission. “Let us make one promise: never again will we let fear silence the industry that speaks for Fiji. Thank you for standing for truth, even when it wasn’t easy,” she proclaimed.

Additionally, Doviverata encouraged journalists to maintain high standards of excellence in their work, urging them to exceed basic reporting practices. She reaffirmed that even during tough times, the media has continually served the people of Fiji. “We kept telling stories, we kept showing up, we kept serving our people, and look at us now—back here finally breathing, finally celebrating excellence again,” she remarked.

This event not only marked the revival of an awards night but also represented a significant resurgence of confidence, pride, and commitment to excellence within the Fijian media sector. Reflecting on the journey from 2007 to 2025, Doviverata concluded with a powerful message: “We did not break; we got better.” Her words shed light on a hopeful and resilient future for the media industry in Fiji, reinforcing a renewed dedication to journalistic integrity. Each media house, she pointed out, has meaningful accomplishments to celebrate and a solid foundation on which to build.
